Revelation 3:20
Man of PeaceBehold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Introduction

My husband and I always wanted to enjoy a more abundant life, but obesity blocked the way. He and I share a family history of heart disease and diabetes. We both smoked and loved to eat. When George suffered a heart attack at 39 and we nearly lost him. After his heart attack, we both quit smoking but the heart damage was done.

The search for a healthy way to cook began. We tried all the "good for you" heart healthy diets and gained weight with each one. We had even tried to eat a one diet famous for being extreme low fat and vegetarian for a year and both gained thirty pounds. Frustrated with the low fat, high carbohydrates diets that were making us fatter every year, we had pretty much given up listening to the "experts."

We reached a crisis period in the Spring of '07. My weight had reached an all time high of 290 pounds and George had hit 304 pounds. We were frustrated and afraid we were out of control. We didn't know if there was an answer. I had begun to wonder how long I could live like this without having a stroke or becoming unable to walk.  We were afraid.

The Turning Point

How do you reach a turning point and make a decision to change? The answer is different for everyone. Losing weight began almost by accident. During the busy vacation week, George and I made a quick trip to the grocery. I picked up a woman's magazine. The article described some new research on weight loss and I decided to give it a try. The diet was for a a new lower fat version of Atkins with more dietary fiber. We tried Atkins once before when it still had all the high saturated fats and virtually no fiber. We decided half heartedly to follow the diet. but I never believed it would work.

For the rest of the week we were in a hurry preparing for my daughter's graduation from college. Family members were coming to visit. My husband and I began a ferocious week of cleaning and painting to get the house ready. After a solid week of activity, my body collapsed. I woke up Friday morning and couldn't stand up. I was in extreme pain in my back and legs. Graduation was Saturday and I was afraid I would not be able to walk to the stadium and watch her accept her diploma. Only lots of pain medication allowed me to hobble to the stadium and back to my car.

Six thousand students received diplomas at Ohio State University stadium that day. We sat there for a long time. As we waited, I had a long time to think about our future. I didn't want to feel this pain for the rest of my life. I felt an amazing satisfaction that George and I had raised two daughters who were now finished with college. Both daughters have wonderful young men and will be starting families soon. I realized I wanted to live and watch my children start families. I realized I wanted to be able to know our future grandchildren. I wanted those grandchildren to remember me as someone who was active and not an invalid.

When we got back home and the crowds had gone, I decided to discuss my thoughts with my husband. I told him, “Today was a wake up call for me. It's time for a change. The pain I am feeling right now is what I will continue to experience the rest of my life if I don’t loose weight,

We have to do something drastic. I want to start following a low fat-low carb diet I read about in a magazine. I want to stick with it until I reach my goal weight. I just have to do this for myself. Is this all right with you?”

He said, “I’ll do anything I can to help you.” This decision began our weight loss journey.. I was filled with confidence at his words.

I thank God for the back pain that lasted all summer. My pain was a daily reminder of why I had to stick to the diet. I thank George, my soul mate, my partner in life's journey, who's loved me through thick and thin. He's been supportive in every way and with God's help, he and I can become healthier together.

We began the New Atkins diet, a low fat, low carb program. By the end of the first week I had lost twelve pounds. We followed their plan pretty closely but changed it just a bit. We decided to add more dietary fiber and used healthy fats. You'll find low carb high fiber recipes in this plan. Otherwise, we followed Atkins pretty closely. I'm sure the added carbs from high fiber cereal slowed me down a bit but I didn't mind because I was still losing amazingly fast.

George told me a couple months later, he privately had serious doubts about eating low carb. He thought, "Oh God, not another diet that will never work!" While I ate low carb, he still had several slices of bread every day. I lost about twelve more pounds during the next month while he lost about five, just eating what I was eating plus the bread. After about a month, he decided to join me in skipping bread and eating low carb as well.

Since starting the diet, I have read all the books in the book list section of this site. I wanted to find out why this diet worked so well. The latest research on weight loss explains why this approach works. I'm delighted to tell you that you will not feel deprived eating low carb.

Seven months later, Christmas in 2007, I was visiting the same clothing store for obese women where I have shopped for years and couldn't find anything to wear. All the clothes on the racks were too big. One lady I'd known for years was now so incapacitated by her weight, she moved around the store in a motorized wheel chair. After shopping, I went home and wept. George and I had found an answer but I didn't know how to share our new found knowledge with so many suffering people.

After some discussion, we decided to build this web site and share the good news. This web site was my Christmas present. Low Carb eating has given us an amazing weight loss. The longer we follow a low carb diet, with healthy carbohydrates and healthy fats, the more energy we have. As of January 11, 2008 I have lost 80 pounds and my husband has lost 70 pounds. And the journey still continues. And with the Lords help, it can help you.
