Dutch Oven Camp Meals
I am rethinking my approach to camp cooking. On April 29th, George and I bought a brand new Little Guy teardrop camper. Our old style of camping meant we carried everything but the kitchen sink to the campground. We have been traveling and camping and learning since then. We still pack way too much stuff, so now we are really thinking of ways to reorganize.
When it's just the two of us camping in our brand new Little Guy teardrop camper, I think we'll pack a three quart, Lodge combo cooker and a replacement lid 10 inch camp dutch oven. I can bake a couple biscuits or some low carb cornbread for the two of us on top of my Coleman stove. If I know we are attending a Teardrop gathering, then I will bring along a couple 12 inch Ovens to use for the group potluck. We just got home from our first teardrop gatehring, Boogie In the Hills 2008 where we met some wonderful new friends who are master cooks in the dutch oven. I have a lot to learn from them.

Cooking without electricity
After suffering from a week long power outage from an ice storm, I began to think about how to cook when there was no electricity. While shopping at Lehman's Hardware store in Kidron, Ohio, a genuine Amish and Mennonite hardware store, specializing in non-electric appliances, we found cast iron dutch ovens were the cooking utensils used by pioneers to bake and cook stews. Lewis and Clark took dutch ovens with them as they explored the west. There were not a lot of information in my local bookstore about dutch oven cooking so I Googled dutch oven cooking and discovered The International Dutch Oven Society.
We still love to eat and have a lot of fun cooking in old fashioned cast iron dutch ovens. Camp cooking is just uses different cooking utensils and a few new techniques. Now that we are following a low-carb diet, I am going to test cooking our low carb recipes on our next trip. There should be no recipe on this web site that can not be prepared while camping, but we will try them out this summer.
